It’s time for us to say ‘goodbye’ to Uhtred. He certainly lived in interesting times. From four kingdoms, to one. From seeming certain annihilation to Englaland’s leading, most important and most revered warlord.
Really fine ending to the series. I can’t remember if in the start he said there would be 13, I thought 12, but he must have found that he wanted to tell a longer story, with this as the final one.
A very well planned end to a well-planned series. There wasn’t an England when the battle started, there was when the sun went down.
I’ll miss Cornwell’s trademark “and” start to sentences and paragraphs. I suppose it wouldn’t have been the same ‘Uhtred’ without them.
The battle scenes as usual outstanding. Understated and nerve stretching. The build up to the big battle is exceptional.
Obviously a joy for him to write. It’s supposedly his own history as I remember. And an absolute joy for us to read.
