I have missed out on number two, it seems. And if I had read that, and rolled my eyes skyward at the ‘Robie and Reel,’ combination, I may well not have bothered going any further. But this was in a sale, so what can I say?
It means well, but is thoroughly disjointed. It’s really two – if not three – plots hammered together. Not very well. A couple of them could even have been linked, but the opportunity wasn’t taken up. And the method of getting the two together there at the end, is laughable.
The editor should have put a stop to it all. Cut that out, save it for another book, develop this stuff that whizzes by at 100 mph. Smooth off the rough edges. Come up with a better way for these two to be there at the end, have them work it out, maybe?
The most well-developed, even likeable character, is the North Korean Chung-Cha, the best bits, set in North Korea.
To be honest, this sort of thing, this type of ‘thriller’ isn’t the sort of thing I would normally pay good money for. They’d have to be, as here, in a sale. Having said that, it is a diverting read, with some interesting sections. Not too formulaic as one mught fear when seeing (on the inside front pages) how many other books he has written in a relatively short time…
